The Behavioural Response of Infants to Heat Stress *
نویسنده
چکیده
The influence of environmental temperature on the water and electrolyte balance of infants has been studied by Cooke, Pratt, and Darrow and reported in this journal.8 However, changes in the feeding behaviour and activity of infants exposed to heat stress have not been extensively studied. The suppression of food intake in adults by high environmental temperature has been known for years," but the influence of psychic factors in adults complicates these results. In the laboratory the relationship between food and water intake and environmental temperature has been studied in several species2' " 18,16 with fairly consistent lowering of the food intake with heat stress. The human infant is in many ways comparable to the laboratory animal in being relatively free of habit and prejudice. Therefore, a study of the feeding behaviour of infants may be of value in understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying the regulation of food intake in the human species. It is the purpose of this paper to report the influence of environmental temperature on the food and water intake of human infants. A few other somewhat unrelated effects of environmental temperature on their behaviour will be mentioned.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of zinc sulfate and chromium picolinate on the performance, immune response and meat quality of Japanese quails under heat stress condition. The birds (n = 540; 7-d-old) were randomly assigned to 9 treatment groups consisting of 3 replicates of 20 birds each in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments [zinc (0, 40, 80 mg...

To study the effect of different levels of peppermint (Mentha piperita) plant powder, on immune system of broilers under heat stress condition, 192 one-day old chickens (Ross, 308) were randomly allocated to 4 dietary treatments with 4 replicates of 12 chicks each, using a completely randomized design. The four groups were characterized by a basal diet (control), basal diet supplemented with 1 ...

AIM To evaluate the effects of low dose fentanyl infusion analgesia on behavioural and neuroendocrine stress response and short term outcome in premature infants ventilated for hyaline membrane disease. METHODS Twenty seven ventilated preterm infants were randomly assigned to receive a mean fentanyl infusion of 1.1 (0.08 SE) micrograms/kg/h for 75 (5) hours, and 28 untreated infants were cons...
